October is a busy month! We recognize Down Syndrome Awareness , Bully Prevention, Cancer Prevention, and National Principals' Month.
Here are some helpful tips to KEEP YOUR CHILD HEALTHY & IN SCHOOL!! Good attendance is the first step in academic success.
Vison and Hearing Screenings will be done, as mandated this year.
Vision Screen - 2nd Grade (September 30, October 1/2)
Hearing Screen - 2nd and 3rd Grade (Oct 7/8/9)
*All new students to the district will also be screened.
The above screenings are not a substitute for a complete vision and hearing evaluation by a physician. Your child is not required to undergo the vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report indicating that an examination has been administered within the past 12 months and the evaluation is on file at the school.
This notice is not a permission to test and is not required to be returned. Vision and Hearing screening are not optional due to these tests are mandated for 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and new students.
If the student fails the initial vision screen, the student is rescreened in 10-14 days. If both tests are failed, then a referral will be mailed to the parent/guardian. Students who wear glasses will not be screened but the glasses will be inspected for bent frames, scratched lenses, etc. Any student who wears glasses and has not seen an optometrist or ophthalmologist in over two years will be given a referral letter.
If the student fails the vision / hearing screening a letter will be mailed to the address in the student's chart with a referral form. If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse, Nurse Toni, at 618-942-2744.
Picture proofs are being sent home today so please be on the lookout for them. If you don't get them today, you should get them tomorrow for sure. Information on how to order this year's school picture is listed step by step. If you have additional questions or need assistance, please email brandi.karnes@herrinschools.org! Picture retakes will be November 21st for all retakes and/or new students.
During the month of September, HES students have been learning about RESPECT. It's important to respect yourself, others, and the environment around you. We encourage everyone to see the value in one another and treat each other with care every day!
Monday, September 23rd will be a School Improvement Early Dismissal Day and students will be dismissed at 2:00 pm. Please ensure students know their dismissal plan.
Friday, September 20th will be a 1/2 School Improvement Early Dismissal Day and students will be dismissed at 11:30 am. Please ensure students know their dismissal plan.
Midterms go home today. Now is a great time to find out how to login to Power School if you are not already doing that. Power School gives parents access to grades at any time so they don't have to find out students are struggling once it's too late.
More HES students being recognized for showing KINDNESS! So proud of them!!
